When I asked my son what kind of cake he wanted for his upcoming Birthday I was surprised at the answer. He very quickly responded “Prime Cake mommy!”, which when translated is “Optimus Prime” from the hit “Transformers.” As I picked my jaw up off the ground I quickly realized that I should never ask a 3 year old what kind of cake they want ever again.

The concept changed several times before I decided that I would be sculpting the head of “Optimus Prime.” This, for me, was the most challenging cake I have constructed to date. With the help of several action figures, from my son’s toy collection I began to cut away at the vanilla cake.

After carving the basic structure I than crumb coated it with buttercream and covered each section with rolled fondant. All silver accents were airbrushed and than a final dusting of pearl silver was applied to the finished cake, to give it a more metallic appearance.

The final result was great and as for my son ..... this was a cake that he will never forget!
